The Tempest
William Shakespeare, The Tempest. Caliban Press, 2001.
Dimensions: 12 3/8’ x 8 3/8’ x 1 1/4”
Bound: 2015.
Full Gray Harmatan goat skin leather binding with blue Chieftain panel with cutouts showing collaged pieces of painted aluminum, aluminum screen, painted paper, corrugated copper; gold and painted tooling on spine. Doublures and paste-downs of painted cork.
The graphic treatment by Mark McMurray of Shakespeare’s text is playful and inventive. The binding treatment is likewise playful, yet faithful to the classical text - it is simply the play’s title. The cutouts in the raised panel on the front and back covers are of interpreted letters spelling Tempest, frontwards on the front and backwards on the back. The spine tooling spells the word “The.”
