Le Satyricon

Gaius Petronius. André Derain. Frequent et Baudier. Paris. 1951.

Dimensions: 19” x 14” x 3”.

Bound: 2025.

Deep red goatskin binding with leather onlays of blues and purples, some of which are suede side up. Also onlays of stone veneer. Acrylic paint (sprayed and brushed). Gold, blind and painted tooling and some sanded leather areas. Painted cork edge-to-edge pastedowns and flyleaves

Derain’s figures are satyrical. He put them in particular places, in and in front of architectural elements… walls, windows, doors and in minimal landscapes. The design of this binding uses the idea of architecture in a landscape, revealing and concealing the intrigue satirically portrayed by Derain.
